Timo Werner opted to join Chelsea over Manchester United due to the ‘financially lucrative’ offer the Blues made to him, according to reports in Germany.

Liverpool had been favourites to sign the Germany forward and Werner had held extensive talks with Jurgen Klopp over a move to Anfield.

However, the pandemic has altered Liverpool’s plans and Klopp admitted this week that he couldn’t countenance signing a player for £50m while cuts were being made elsewhere in the club.

That opened the market up for Werner and Sky Germany claim United actually submitted an initial bid for the forward before Chelsea did.
