A police sergeant by name Okema Azuquo has beaten and killed a police inspector, Adekunle Illesanmi for arguing with him about the time of closure of the gate in their residence in Dosumu Street in the Agbelekale area Oke-Odo located in Lagos state Nigeria.

Reports has it that the sergeant, Okema Azuquo who was in battle of words with other tenants in the compound over the time at which the gate of the compound is being locked was angered when one of the tenants who is a police inspector, Adekunle Illesanmi intervened.



The sergeant reportedly pounced on the police inspector out of anger beating him continuously on the ground with a machete which left deep wounds on the inspector, other tenants who tried to stop him got cut in the process but they however managed to rush the inspector to the hospital for treatment, nut he did not survive as he was confirmed dead on Sunday 7th June 2020.

Eye witnesses said that the inspector was only trying to protect other civilian tenants from being harmed by the sergeants because of the rage with which he was talking to other tenants in the compound, he unfortunately lost his life trying to protect others.



The incident was confirmed by the Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who said the was butchered in the process of protecting the lives of other tenants in the compound.

“The Lagos state police commissioner Hakeem Odumosu, paid tribute to him for his courageous act, while commiserating with Ilesanmi’s family”, Elkana said.

The police statement on the incident reads,

“On Thursday, June 4, 2020, around 8.10pm, one Azeez Adebayo of No 8. Dosumu Street, Agbelekale Oke-Odo, reported at the Oke-Odo Police Station that one Sergeant Okema Azuquo, a tenant in the same house, returned home and engaged other tenants in a fight over gate closure and inflicted machete cuts on one Inspector Adekunle Ilesanmi, who was also a tenant in the house and was trying to stop the sergeant from harming other civilian tenants.”

He added that “the investigation has been taken over by the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, and the suspect will be charged as soon as investigation and disciplinary proceedings are concluded.”
