Do you know the longest words in English language and do you think you can pronounce them?
Well, you certainly might be able to but definitely not at a straight-go for many people. Ready to know what they are? 1. Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (45 letters) The very first on the list and the longest. I see some people already counting the number of letters it has. Well-done, happy counting! This word refers to a lung disease that is contracted by inhaling fine particles of silica, especially during a volcano. Medically, it is the same as siliosis. Other similarly long words that can be found in English language are: 2. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (36 letters) The first day I saw this word, I actually concluded it was the longest; not until I came across equally lengthy ones and then of course, I could tell which was longer because I was too lazy to count. Gosh! These words are so intimidating. And guess the meaning of this particular word - it is actually a name for the fear of long words. Hilarious, isn't? 3. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (34 letters) Did I see you struggling to pronounce this? Haha! Gotcha! Well, you're not the only one on the table. I conveniently shorten it as, "supercal". Yep! I can't kill myself. The meaning? It is something to say when you have nothing to say. `That's if you're even able to say it. Lol!` 4. Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism (30 letters) A medical term used to describe a condition related to hypoparathyroidism but characterized by normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. 5. Floccinaucinihilipilification (29 letters) This word looks longer than it actually is. It is often used in a humorous way to mean the act or habit of describing or regarding something as being worthless or having no value. `Ermm... I could say the same for the word itself, you know. Lol!` 6. Antidisestablishmentarianism (28 letters) It is a term used to describe a political movement in the 19th century sought to separate church and state. It is very common-word-like, so it shouldn't be difficult to pronounce. Unless... 7. Honorificabilitudinitatibus (27 letters) This one was particularly used in one of Shakespeare's, "Love's Labour's Lost" and it is the longest word in his works. It means the state of being able to achieve honours. 8. Thyroparathyroidectomized (25 letters) This is a medical term used to describe the total removal of both the thyroid and parathyroid glands. 9. Dichlorodifluoromethane (23 letters) This is a common derivative of chlorofluoromethane, with the chemical compound, CF2Cl2. "the numbers are in subscript". One funny thing about organic compounds nomenclature is that we could actually have a name far longer than the longest word through complex reactions and derivations. 10. Incomprehensibilities (21 letters) Simply impossible to comprehend. In the 90s, this word held the record as being the longest word in common usage. There you go with the longest words in English language. Learn them, have fun with them, and feel free to intimidate others using them. Haha!
