How many pairs of jeans have you owned in your life? Thirty? Fifty? But in all that denim-wearing time, we bet you've never thought about that tiny extra front pocket for more than a fleeting second, if that.In fact, it's probably been more of a nuance in your life, as you push past it to stow your keys in the bigger pocket before heading out the door.

The small pocket is actually called a watch pocket because it was originally intended as a safe place for men to store their pocket watches. It dates back to Levi’s first ever pair of jeans, which hit the market in 1879.

The Levi Strauss blog also pointed out that originally, there were only four pockets on a pair of blue jeans, the watch pocket included. The first blue jeans had four pockets—only one in back and, in the front, two plus the small, watch pocket,” the blog stated.

User Renata Janoskova cited Levi Strauss, iconic American jeans brand, as having the answer to the mystery pocket.

According to a blog post on their website, the pocket is a “watch pocket”, small enough to keep a pocket watch.

Ms Janoskova expaned on this, explaining that Levis introduced the pockets to cater for cowboys pocket watches.

Back in the 1800s, cowboys used to wear their watches on chains and kept them in their waistcosts. To keep them from getting broken, Levis introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch.”Hence know now that the small pocket on jeans wasn't or is not a design but was made to for cowboys to keep their watch to avoid it from breaking.

Before now lots of people have often mistaken the small pocket for a design and sometimes thought it was just there for fancy but this post has expressly explained that it isn't.
