SLEEP RULES These are the two things you should never do if you wake up in the middle of the night and want to get back to sleep

If you want to drift back off to sleep after suddenly waking, you should never do these two things

THERE’S nothing worse than knowing you have an early start the next morning and then suddenly waking up in the middle of the night.

And then once you are awake, sleep then seems to evade you and you end up lying there wide-eyed willing yourself to drift back off.

A sleep expert has revealed the two things you should never do if you want to get back to sleep after waking at night

But now a sleep specialist has revealed the two things you should never do if you suddenly wake during the night and want to get back to sleep.

And they both involve not leaving your bed or even opening your eyes.

Dr Michael Breus, a sleep expert and author says the first thing you should never do if you wake up is go to the bathroom unless you really need to.

Experts say getting out of bed or even sitting up in bed won’t help you drift off as it increases your heart rate

He told the Independent that when you get out of bed to stumble to the bathroom or even decide to sit up, it causes your heart rate to increase.

When drifting off to sleep, your heart rate lowers as you relax but if it is raised, you find it difficult to start knocking out the Zs again.

Meanwhile the second thing you should never do means you have to fight every instinct you have.

According to Dr Breus if you wake, you should never reach for your phone or even look at your alarm clock for the time.

He explains that looking at the time causes the brain to become agitated and stressed, which are the two worst feelings if you want to drop back off.

You should never look at your phone or even your clock as it will cause you to become agitated and stressed

So next time you wake up in the middle of the night when you don’t have to, don’t move or even open your eyes!

And if you ever wondered what time you should be going to bed, we told you when you should be going to sleep if you want to wake up feeling fresh.
