Many students often make grammatical errors in English Language. Here is a list of the common mistake we make.

1. Incorrect: My watch is ten minutes late.
Correct: My watch is ten minutes slow.
Note: Watch cannot be late but slow. To late is to occur after the expected time. Watch is working so it can only be slow but not late.

2. Incorrect: My father is also sitting on the high table.
Correct: My father is also sitting on the rostrum ( or platform or podium )
Note: Rostrum,platform or podium is a place raised higher from the floor for the guest speaker at a public meeting. High table is a table where teachers eat,separated from where students eat.

3. Incorrect: He offered me a lift to Abuja.
Correct: He offered me a free ride to Abuja.
4. Incorrect: Borrow me your pen.
Correct: Lend me your pen.
Note: "To borrow" is to get something from someone. "To lend" is to give out something.

5. Incorrect: This is my first time of coming to Lagos.
Correct: This is my first time that i will have to come to Lagos.
6. Incorrect: I am not good in chemistry.
Correct: I am good at chemistry.
7. Incorrect: I hereby congratulate you for your success in the examination.
Correct: I hereby congratulate you on your success in the examination.
8. Incorrect: I will finish my exams next tomorrow.
Correct: I will finish my exams the day after tomorrow.
9. Incorrect: I want to buy a coulured television.
Correct: I want to buy a colour television.
10. Incorrect: Where is my short knicker.
Correct: Where is my pair of shorts.
Note: Short is a pair trousers ending at or above the knee worn mostly by children.
