Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has sent Manchester United a transfer warning by Shazam(m): Mon 01, June, 2020 04:36pm

Considering Diego Simeone looks like the kind of manager you'd want to avoid disappointing at all costs, Atletico Madrid's players take a risky approach to their own transfer business.
Antoine Griezmann looks to have set a trend of tawdry transfer sagas coming out of Atletico, although it will take some effort to plumb the depths of his La Decision announcement in 2018 which confirmed he would stay at the Wanda Metropolitano, only to leave for Barcelona a year later anyway.
All Griezmann achieved was making himself look like a high maintenance footballer. Manchester United were keen on the Frenchman at one stage but he always heading to Barcelona last summer, although his first year at the Nou Camp has been anything but an unqualified success.
Now Saul Niguez has hinted he's following Griezmann's example in using a transfer story to accelerate his own social media following. On Sunday the 25-year-old rather cryptically took to Twitter to reveal he would announce a "new club" in three days time.
Anybody who has even the slightest understanding of this industry knows that is as likely to be a new three iron as it is a move to United or Arsenal. Transfers just don't happen like that.
To start with Saul, who has been with Atletico Madrid since he was 14, still has six years left on his contract with his current club, who would expect a substantial fee for one of Spain's best midfielders. Those deals are not going to be concluded while club's continue to count the cost of the coronavirus to their balance sheets.
Even if a club had stumped up the cash to convince Atletico to do business, the idea of both selling and buying club keeping schtum for three days while Saul announces the transfer himself.
This is almost certainly a publicity stunt from Saul, or a joke gone wrong. It's certainly got his name in the headlines. But it might not do his credibility much good long-term.
The Spain midfielder has been linked with United this season and he could be seen as an ideal Paul Pogba replacement, although the World Cup winner's chances of leaving Old Trafford this summer are equally as slim.
United reportedly first watched Saul in 2014, when he was on loan at Rayo Vallecano. Now he's emerged as the beating heart of this Atletico team, alongside Koke, and he's an all-action, modern midfielder.
But his social media activity on Sunday might also hint that he can be hard work. Over the previous 12 months United have had their fill of transfer tales involving world-class midfielders, with Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola attempting to engineer a move away from the club.
Saul might fit the profile of an ideal recruit to replace the 27-year-old, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear he has no time for excessive egos in this squad.
He's made a point of focusing on character as well as quality and while it would be unfair to judge Saul on one social media post alone, Sunday's escapade wasn't exactly a good look, especially in the current climate.
So much about the next transfer window remains unknown, from when it starts and ends to the capability of clubs to do deals, but it's unlikely players with six years left on their current contracts will be determining their own future on social media. That much we do know.
