Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has opened up on the role Cristiano Ronaldo has played in his career to date. Like the Juventus star, the Red Devils midfielder is already a firm favourite among fans. And Fernandes believes he’s learnt focus, determination and ability from his compatriot.

Speaking to A Bola, Fernandes said: “Cristiano Ronaldo is the ideal person for you to look at and know what to follow in terms of career.

“You have to have that focus, that determination, the ability to work.”

United signed Ronaldo as an unknown teenager back in the summer of 2003, raiding Sporting Lisbon for the forward.

And he became a popular figure at Old Trafford throughout his spell at the Theatre of Dreams, propelling the club to three Premier League titles.

Ronaldo also helped propel the Red Devils to Champions League glory in 2008 – with the Juventus star on target in the final victory against Chelsea.

Fernandes recently opened up on that showdown, saying: “I think from history I have maybe one game – the Champions League final when Cristiano scores with the header.

“After this, he misses a penalty, I think it’s the same one right, against Chelsea? This one.

“I think it was a great final and for Cristiano it was one of the best games yet, because he scored an amazing goal with a header. He doesn’t jump, he flies.

“After this, he missed the penalty, but United won the Champions League and at the end we see him crying on the ground because he won the Champions League.

“It was one of the most important games in the history of Manchester United.”
who inspire him.

And he named Deco, Joao Moutinho and Rui Costa as being inspirations – as well as Andrea Pirlo and Andres Iniesta.

“Then I had the opportunity to play against Pirlo and Iniesta, players I admire and who are two of the best midfielders I remember seeing,” he said.

“Deco, Rui Costa and Moutinho, whom I have always admired for their tactical intelligence.”

On comparisons with Benfica’s Pizzi, he added: “Regardless of being from Sporting, you have to know how to recognise each other’s talent.

“It’s something that’s rarely seen today.

“If someone says that Bruno Fernandes is good, someone will appear saying Pizzi is better. It’s unnecessary, because then we go to the national team and it doesn’t matter if Pizzi is better than Bruno, because Pizzi plays with Bruno to make the national team better.

“We have to value what is ours, you can tell me that you like A, B or C more, but you have to recognise the talent of others.”
