As a result of these, it has led to the fact that Nigerians would prefer to call things that exist among us with its native names than calling it with the English name. In today's lesson, we shall be looking into the English name of our most used soup thickening and flavoring agent known in the Igbo land as "Ogbono" and "Apon" in Yoruba. Ogbono is a genus of African and Southeast Asia trees in the family Irvingiaceae. This tree bears edible fruits that look like Mango and are valued for their fat and protein-rich nuts(seed). Its fruits can be consumed fresh and the seed can also be eaten raw or roasted. Research and studies have shown that its seed contains 18% amino acid and is a good source of nutrients. Ogbono contains; 1. Calcium 2. Potassium 3. Magnesium 4. Sodium 5. Phosphorus and 6. Iron The fruits can be processed into jam, juice, jelly, and wine. The nuts can be pounded into butter and are processed to produce edible oil used for cooking. It is also used to prepare cosmetics, soap and is mostly used as thickening and flavoring agents for soups. Ogbono, as commonly known in some parts of Nigeria, has a lot of health benefits which includes: 1. It aids bodybuilding 2. It helps in weight loss 3. It decreases cholesterol levels.
