Africa Day 2020: Buhari calls for peace and love among continent's leaders by Mikolo(m): Tue 26, May, 2020 06:40am
President Muhammadu Buhari has sued for unity and peace among African countries, saying it is a "prerequisite for sustainable development" as the continent unites on a progressive course amid Covid-19 pandemic.

Buhari made the call in a message to African leaders to mark the ''Africa Day 2020,'' commemorated by the African Union Commission (AUC).

A statement released by Garba Shehu, senior presidential aide on media and publicity, on Monday, May 25, said the president noted that "Africa has given the world a new hope by choosing the theme ''Silencing the Guns in the context of the COVID-19'' in celebration of Africa Day 2020.

Africa Day is observed annually on May 25 to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the precursor of the African Union, which was created on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

''Peace, security, unity and harmony are prerequisites for development in Africa,” President Buhari admonished other African leaders, stressing that the continents can move forward by ''silencing the guns to achieve peace and grow African economies."

He also urged regional economic groups, civil society organisations and the private sector in Africa to take full ownership of the theme of this year’s celebration to strengthen collaborative efforts among member-countries of the African Union.
