Men of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Ogun State chapter have been blamed for the demise of a pregnant woman who reportedly gave up the ghost while been stopped by officers attached to a checkpoint at Waterside Local Government Area of the state.

It was reported that the woman whose name was not revealed is been carried on a motorcycle, heading to the hospital so she can be delivered of her baby. Unfortunately for them, they were stopped by policemen who were on duty to ensure compliance to the COVID-19 lockdown order.

The pregnant woman died while the policemen were interrogating them on the checkpoint.

Reports, however, had it that Youths of Ibiade LGA who were unhappy with the incident took to the street to protest against the death of the pregnant mother.

The incident which happened on Thursday (today) saw the angry youths taken the woman’s remain to the Abigi Divisional Police Headquarters, condemning and blaming the officers for her death.

The youths insinuate that the woman died on the spot because the motorcycle carrying her was been delayed by the police officers who were asking for money.

Reacting to the incident, the state police command denied the allegations that their men were the cause of the pregnant woman’s death.

The Ogun State police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in his reaction said “The officers on official duty enforcing the lockdown order stopped the bike for carrying three persons, violating the social distancing order of two occupants on a bike.”

“our officers were not responsible for the pregnant woman’s death,” Abimbola noted.

He said there were three occupants on a motorcycle as against the directive of the state government.

According to him, they were stopped and interrogated on why they violated the lockdown order, adding that immediately they took note of the woman’s situation, they were asked to go.

Oyeyemi noted further that the officers had questioned the motorbike rider to be sure that the pregnant woman was not being kidnapped, adding also that she did not die at the police checkpoint.

However, reports had it that normalcy has been restored in the community after leaders in the area were involved in the matter.
