The Ministry of Education in Uganda has spoken out on fears that 2020 could be a dead academic year.

While speaking to the press, the Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry, Alex Kakooza urged parents and teachers not to panic.

“We are doing whatever we can to ensure that learners don’t miss out on what they are supposed to learn. We have drafted a timetable for the continuation of schools should the lockdown be lifted” Kakooza said.

Kakoooza said they are consulting with the Ministry of Health on how schools can resume, and to outline the standard operating procedures (SOPs)

In the wake of coronavirus, the government closed all educational institutions as early as March to stem the spread of Covid-19 in Uganda.

To that end, the ministry of education produced a framework to guide the process of continuity of learning in which they identified the basic competencies or concepts to study and harmonize learning packages or materials for use in the continuity of learning while learners are still at home.

While addressing the nation at the beginning of this month, President Museveni stated that it would be okay for students to remain home for long or even a year instead of going to returning to school to contract Covid-19.
