No, Her Majesty will not step aside and abdicate her Crown so that Charles can be King.
To Elizabeth the promise she made on her 21st Birthday in South Africa, That I pledge my whole life whether it be long or short to your service and to the service of our Great Imperial Family, that is a pledge she made to all her people and to God and she will not break that oath. I do believe that we will see a Regency with Prince Charles becoming the Prince Regent. That effectively makes Charles the King. All of Her Majesty’s duties, reading state papers, signing bills into law, the state opening of Parliament, the hosting of State Dinners, sitting as Head of the Commonwealth nations. All of these current duties that Elizabeth II R does will become Charles’ duties, however she will still be Queen. The National Anthem will still be God Save the Queen, they will still be Her Majesty’s Ships, The royal guards uniforms will still have ER II on them, but she will be retired from all official duties of the Monarch. I believe this to be an even more probable outcome now that Prince Phillip the Queens Consort has retired from public life, it has already come from the palace from very reliable yet unnamed sources that the Queen has had the Regency bill already drawn up and she intends to have it put in place when she turns 95 regardless of her health. However we must take a few things into perspective. Her Majesty’s health and the belief she will live over 100 years comes from her Mother’s longevity, yet unlike her mother Her Majesty has had the stress of being the Regent for now 66 years, also unlike her mother who spent more of her life as a widow than as a wife, Elizabeth II has been married for 70 years. I would suspect that if Prince Philip’s health starts to fail or he passes away that our Queen will retire from public life if not quickly follow her husband to the grave.
